Major Search Engines
There are many search engines available on the Internet, but really there are just a few that are real contenders when it comes to reach the mass audience.
Google
Currently ranked as the most popular search engine. Google has its own rules as most search engines, but they should be examined carefully to earn a successful ranking. Location and frequency determines the rank while also reliying heavily on link analysis. Google uses a complex PageRank algorithm to calculate each page PR. The PR of your webpage is very important for several reasons and of course, the higher the better. Google also supplies search results for AOL, Earthlink, Ask Jeeves and other partners
Yahoo
Since its departure from google in 2003, Yahoo has been a very close contender. Yahoo uses editors to organize websites into a directory, consisting of categories specific to a website. A website very easily can be listed in Yahoos search results without being listed in a specific category. Ranking results in Yahoo are based on keyword importance, links and traffic. Yahoo partnerts with Alta Visa, MSN, Overture and Hotbot.
MSN
Launched a new meta search engine with a 5 billion index, featuring advanced search techniques. Its own crawler technology has some features not available on Google or Yahoo and tends to crawl a site quicker than most search engines. MSN previously used results from yahoo.
AOL
Google provides search results to AOL, however the main advantage being that AOL users tend to use AOL search rather than other search engines
